Differences in Aggression, Impulsivity and Personality Trait According to Age at Onset in Male Alcoholics

Abstract
Alcohol dependence is a heterogenous disorder caused by a complex interaction of genetic and environmental factors. There are several typological approaches in study of alcoholism. Among them, age at onset is one of useful approaches in alcoholic
study.
The authors tried to identify differences in clinical characteristics and aggression, impulsivity and personality trait according to age at onset.

We examined 50 male patients with alcohol dependence (DSM-¥³) who had been admitted in Yong-In Mental Hospital from December 1st 2000 to June 30th 2001. We performed semi-structured interview for demographic and clinical characteristics.
Self-report
questionnaires for Barratt's Imulsivity Scale, BDHI (Buss-Durkey Hostility Inventory) and NEO-PI-R (NEO Personality Inventory Revised) were given to all subject at least 4weeks later after admission. We devided alcoholic patients into two groups
according to age at onse ; early onset alcoholics (¡Â25, N=12) and late onset alcoholics (¡Ã25, N=38). T-test and ¥ö2-test and Fisher exact probability test were used for statistical analysis.

There were no significant differences in demographical characteristics according to age at onset, except religion. But there were significant differences in several clinical characteristics. In clinical symptoms, early onset alcoholics drank
alcohol
more frequently during one month before admission, had much more familial loading of alcohol dependence and patterns of Type ¥±alcoholism. In contrary, there were no differences especially in drinking amount, frequency, tolerance, clinical course
and
disease severity.

And there were no differences in Alcohol Use Inventory, aggression, impulsivity and NEO-PI-R.

Our findings suggest that age at onset may affect some clinical characteristics but do not affect in aggression, impulsivity and personality trait and have no effect on prognosis of alcohol dependence in male alcoholics
